Psalm 27 verse 1: the Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
(a) the Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?
Since we are told to act like little children to see and enter the kingdom of God (Matthew 18 verse 3), this will be dissected in the child’s point of view.
When you are in the living room with your son or daughter; probably seeing a movie and you are in a country that experiences interrupted power supply; then the power supply is interrupted, you would hear or see fear in your child’s action, voice or countenance. This is because he or she doesn’t know what to expect or do since everywhere is dark. The child holds onto you and becomes calm.
Imagine having the Lord who is uninterrupted power supply personified. What am I saying? ‘Only Him one is the light’. I am sure that the sun, moon and stars get their light from Him; He is the Father of lights (James 1 verse 7). The sun rises in the day and sets at dusk; the moon and stars only shine at night; but the Father shines always. Having the Lord as our light means no darkness (John 1 verse 5).
Darkness here carries fear, uncertainty, confusion and every negative virtue along with it. That is why thieves often operate at night. Negative things happen in the dark. This is because there is absence of light to send darkness on exile. When light comes on the scene everything that was dead comes alive because light carries life along with it (John 1 verse 4). When there is light what would you be afraid of?
(b) the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Back to a child’s point of view. A child whose father is a soldier or a fighter has nothing to be afraid of. The child knows who his father is and so he’s not afraid of anyone who tries to attack him. Why? Because he knows he has a backing; a father who will fight for him. The child will conveniently look for trouble and when you want to attack him, what will you see him do? He will run to his father and hide behind his father. Then you will hear the child say something like, “You cannot touch me!” This is because he knows his father will defend him.
Imagine the Lord as your strength; the One who cannot be defeated and cannot be handicapped; the Unlimited One as your strength. It is victory all the way. At least a child whose father is a soldier can be handicapped when his child attacks the child of the President of that country. The Lord has no superior because He is the Superior. Be like David who knew his God and boasted in the Lord when he confronted Goliath (1st Samuel 17 verses 23 to 51) . What happened? He had the victory.
