Hours Later…

After I prepared dinner, I waited for Pop to return so that we would have dinner together like we always did. He didn’t return until half past nine… This was very unusual of him.

“Welcome Pop. Dinner is ready.” I said.

“Thanks Pumpkin. Ermm… about dinner… I have had dinner already.” He replied trying so hard to avoid eye contact.

“…Okay” I said after a long pause. I had lost my appetite.

“He had dinner with her. I should just Google her…” I thought to myself on my way to my room.

I retraced my steps and went to the sitting room where Pop sat and was watching Chelsea versus Manchester United match. I knew this was a wrong timing, but I didn’t care.

“Pop?” I began.

“Yes Pumpkin” he replied without taking his eyes off the television set.

“Tell me about Kate. How did you two meet? What does she do? Where does she work? Does she have any kids? Is she divorced?” I bombarded him with question without stopping.

“Hey! Hey!! Hey!!!” Pop exclaimed and continued, “Calm down Pumpkin. One question at a time; I know that when you ask questions like this, you want to carry out a research.”

“Yes Pop, you caught me” I shrugged and continued, “You are my priority now, so I would not want a short term woman to be my Pop’s lady.

“Okay…. Well to answer your question, she is a single mother of one. His name is Fred. He is twelve years old. You would like him when you get to meet him. I met her at my work place about a month ago. She works at Ocean View Real Estate firm. She was in the building to make some inquiries. I won’t bore you with the details of our meeting but I can tell you that our meeting was not by mistake. I did not tell you about her earlier because I didn’t want to raise your hopes.

“Okay, let me allow you to continue seeing your match. That is all for now.” I said and stood up.

“Sleep tight darling” he replied.

“Good night Pop.” I replied.

I had enough information to begin my research. There was something that repelled me from Kate. I couldn’t just place it. I concluded that probably it was because I had a prospective step mother in B. I gave up the thought of searching for Kate on Google.

I decided to let events unfold.
