“Use your words babe.” I said.

“Jake, as in, my brother.” She said.

“Oh!” I exclaimed.

“Yeah!” she responded.

“Your brother and I are just friends.” I said.

“Okay…” She replied.

I noticed she had more to say but settled for the ‘okay’ reply. I decided to change the subject.

“What have you had today?” I asked.

“I didn’t have appetite, so I settled for fruit salad” she answered.

“Okay… that’s better.” I said and asked, “so are you ready to talk now?”

“Yes… When I was sixteen…”

I listened with my mouth agape amazed at what sixteen year old Dianne passed through. I wouldn’t wish that to anyone.

When she was done, all I could do was to hold her. I couldn’t control the tears that ran down my cheeks.

“Is Pete aware?” I asked.

“Yes. I told him this morning.” She answered.

“And?” I asked.

“He said he’ll protect me from now on.” She answered.

“It is all in the past now. Look how you turned out stronger. You have Pete now. You’ll be fine…” I went on and on with words of encouragement.
